Emergency Preparedness Fair Handouts and Photos

The Fair was a huge success thanks to everyone who helped plan, present, set up displays, and to everyone who came to learn how to be prepared for any emergency.

Handouts from the Fair are available in a drop box, in keeping with our goal of keeping the event green we had a limited number of paper copies available.

Be Ready!


In conjunction with National Emergency Preparedness Month, Emergency Preparedness Fair will feature classes, displays, and activities to help you prepare yourself and your family for emergencies in central Maryland.

Classes will be offered by local preparedness experts, including representatives from the Howard County Office of Emergency Management and the Howard County Fire Department.

Topics included are:

  • How to put together a Family Emergency Plan
  • Food Preparation and Safety During Emergencies

Disaster Preparedness in Howard County – Tom McNeal, Deputy Director, Howard County Office of Emergency Management.  Potential disasters in the area, what we and county leaders can do to prepare for them, are the focus of this session.

72-Hour Kits – Pastor Chad Kline & Troop 327. Session will highlight how we can prepare 72-hour kits for ourselves, families, and pets.

Hands-Only CPR – Howard County Fire Department.  CPR can more than double a person’s chance of survival after cardiac arrest.  Come gain the skills to save a life!

Family Emergency Plan – Davis and Diana Gardner. Every individual and family should have an emergency plan in the event that an emergency or disaster strikes.  This session will highlight what you should do to prepare your own/your family’s emergency plan.

Legal Concerns Associated with Family Documents for use during Emergencies – Randall L. Hagen, Law Office of Randall L. Hagen, Esq. Law offices of Randall L. Hagen, LLC.  Session will focus on legal concerns associated with emergencies and disasters including wills, power of attorney, and personal bankruptcy.

Preserving Food for Long Term Storage – Kim Basinger, M.S., CFCS, LDN, Howard County Extension.  Session will highlight up-to-date food preservation methods that can be used to preserve and store foods for long-term storage.

First Aid in Emergencies  Greg Burgoyne, M.D.  What should you do when a family member or friend is hurt in a disaster situation?  What things should you have on hand to meet their needs?  This session will answer these and other questions.

Food Preparation when the Power is Out  Camille Lund.  This session will highlight cooking methods and food safety concerns that individuals and families can use when the power is out. 

Preparing and Preserving Documents and Valuables for Emergencies  Traci McLeroy.  Do you know where all your important documents are and could you quickly access them in an emergency?  This session will provide guidelines for organizing and preparing your important documents for emergencies. 

Unemployed: What Can I Do?  Carrie Weatherbee, Columbia Stake Employment Specialist.  No one expects to find themselves unemployed, but unemployment comes to some of us.  Session will highlight approaches available to improve one’s employment situation.

Water Purification and Storage During Emergencies  Forest Platt. Water is one of our most important resources.  This session will provide participants with guidelines for storage and purification so there will be enough available for individuals, families, and pets should disaster strike.

Using Amateur Radios During Emergencies  Erwin Schoeny.  Landline phones and cell towers may stop working during a major disaster.  This session will introduce you to ways that amateur radios help out when other forms of communication are no longer available.

Financial Preparation for Emergencies – Richard Persons, CPA.  ATMs and other day-to-day sources of money may not be available when disasters strike.  This session will not only focus on what to do to prepare financially for a disaster, but how we should prepare with savings and insurance for flooding and other possible disasters in our area.

Power Options During Emergencies – Lorin Lund.  This session will highlight creative and practical ways that individuals and families can have the power they need to cook, have light, power essential appliances, and stay warm when traditional sources of power are not available.

Preparation of Grains Emergencies – Sue Swenson.  This session will focus on ways that grains can be used to provide nourishment when the power goes out or money is tight.

Sanitation During Emergencies  Donna Schott.  Do you know what you should do with waste products during disasters and other emergencies? This session will answer this and other questions related to sanitation issues when disasters strike.

Winter Gardening  Thomas Reinsch, PhD, Acting Director, USDA Soil Science Division, Service Soils. This presentation will focus on ways to extend gardening to include the winter months.  Topics include site preparation, crop selection and how to meet temperature, moisture, and light requirements.
